40 Years On, 40 Years Forward: UK Professionals Agree ‘Skills Fluidity’ Will Trigger the Next Big Hiring Shift

Robert Walters marks their 40th anniversary by sharing new research revealing the biggest changes to the global hiring landscape.

Half (51%) of professionals say that ‘skills fluidity’ – the ability to quickly shift capabilities to in demand areas – will drive hiring habits over the next forty years.

In celebration of reaching four decades of delivering specialist recruitment, outsourcing, and talent advisory services across the globe, Robert Walters, the global talent solutions partner shares new research on how global hiring has shifted since 1985.

The findings come from a survey of 2,000 white-collar professionals and reveal that while over a quarter (28%) of today’s jobseekers are now applying for 20+ jobs at once, often using AI-powered tools to assist with the process. 48% of employers still state difficulties with finding the skills they need.

Last Four Decades Defined by Flex and Tech

According to professionals surveyed, the factors triggering the biggest changes to hiring over the past forty year have been the rise in flexible working arrangements (40%) and evolving technology & AI (29%).

“The face of recruitment has transformed dramatically since Robert Walters was founded in 1985” says Chris Eldridge, CEO of Robert Walters UK & Ireland. “Back then, jobseekers mailed or faxed CVs to employers who relied on paper-based filing systems. Today, AI-driven platforms, mobile applications and auto or single-click apply features dominate hiring processes, making applications faster but often less relevant and personalised.”

“Our working week has also evolved; five days a week in-office is now a rarity in most white-collar workplaces, while flexible working arrangements sit high on the list of most employee’s expectations.”

Are We Heading Towards a ‘Skills-Fluid’ Future?

‘Skills fluidity’ – the trend tipped as the next big hiring change – is already being identified in roles. For example, the rise of financial professionals pivoting to sustainable finance in response to vacancies and skills gaps within the green and renewable energies sectors.

Indeed, skills shortages now represent a global workforce problem. The OECD states that the ‘vast majority’ of its 44 member countries (incl. UK, United States, France, Australia) show key skill or occupational shortages.

“In today’s market, adaptability is the new differentiator,” Chris remarks. “Professionals who stay abreast of change and reskill strategically will not only prove themselves as a powerful asset but open the door to multiple career paths.

“As skills shortages continue to deepen, hiring managers and recruiters are increasingly seeking out flexible, all-rounder candidates. Onboarding key skills at pace enhances business agility and operational efficiency – factors we miss out on when skills are short.”

However, the Robert Walters’ Benefits Guide found that less than a third (31%) of UK professionals receive any form of employer funding towards their professional development (e.g. upskilling and training opportunities). With in-demand skills constantly changing, current skills programmes will need to catch up to support a skills-fluid future.

“Over the last forty years, we’ve witnessed significant workforce changes which have altered the way we apply and hire for jobs globally.” Chris concludes “Heading towards the next chapter of our story, we look forward to continuing our support of professionals and businesses navigating these changes in the employment landscape.”
