Top 10 technology roles

Are you considering a career change? The technology sector offers exciting opportunities and many different career paths - which roles could be right for you?

“Businesses are keen to employ technology professionals from different backgrounds and with experience across sectors and professions," comments Mat Knutton, Associate Director for technology recruitment at Robert Walters.

"While some roles will require specific experience, there are many opportunities for professionals with non-technology backgrounds to add real value to businesses."

Ten key technology roles:

  • Technical support

We all need a bit of technology help sometimes. Technical support team members support, monitor and maintain the technology of the workplace and respond to requests for help from users in the business.

Technical support provides you with the opportunity to work in different types of companies and the chance to explore different industries.

While some roles will require specific experience, there are many opportunities for professionals with non-technology backgrounds to add real value to businesses.
  • Project manager

Technology project managers are responsible for the planning, development and installation systems or new technology within the business.

Working as a project manager also provides you with the chance to work across different industries.

  • Technical consultant

A technical consultant’s role can be quite versatile. You can be involved in a technology project at any stage of the project lifecycle.

For example, you can find yourself pitching for a contract, refining a specification to implementing systems for external clients.

  • Business analyst

Working as a business analyst is all about looking for ways to improve the processes and business operations using technology.

As a BA, you will be required to analyse business needs, gather requirements and create a project plan to design technological solutions.

  • Web developer

Working as a web developer is all about building the infrastructure behind websites. This is quite a technical role with the requirement to code and program.

If you have a creative yet technical side, this role provides the chance to embrace both. Skills can be used in small and large companies, in-house and agency based.

  • Software tester

As technology is always evolving and developing, software testers are required to test, fix and analyse systems to determine how it could fail. As a software tester you will have the chance to work at different stages of projects and a chance to work up.

  • Technical sales

The day to day role in technical sales involves providing advice to customers before and after sales.

The job role is moderately diverse as it involves dealing with different customers and their requirements.

  • Network engineer

Being a network engineer can seen as a technically demanding role. It involves designing, setting up and maintaining communication systems

Network engineers may work in an internal support team or for a consultancy type of firm to address the needs of clients.

  • Systems analyst

Systems analysts investigate and analyse business problems to design technology solutions.

The role requires extensive technical knowledge to ensure you can respond to requests from businesses.

  • Software engineer

As a software engineer you will be required to design and program system software. This requires the understanding of software and hardware functions.

The role provides a lot of interaction with other areas of the business to assess and provide solutions.

For those looking to move into the technology sector, finding your niche and developing your skill set in the right way will be crucial to a successful career move.
