Lawyer – In-house Counsel

Location – city of London
Type: Full-time, Permanent

We are looking for a commercially minded solicitor with at least 4 years' post-qualification experience (PQE) to join an in-house Legal Team. This is an excellent opportunity to work at the heart of a dynamic insurance business, providing legal support across the managing agency and its syndicates.

As a trusted in-house counsel, you will work closely with senior management, underwriting teams, claims handlers and other business stakeholders, delivering pragmatic, commercially focused legal advice across a broad range of matters.

The Role

This is a varied and hands-on position where no two days are the same. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Advising senior management on commercial contracts, new business initiatives and general corporate matters.
  • Reviewing, drafting and negotiating a range of insurance-related agreements, including:
    • Binding Authority Agreements
    • Terms of Business Agreements (TOBAs)
    • Delegated Claims Administration (DCA) Agreements
  • Advising underwriting teams on policy wordings and product development.
  • Supporting claims handlers with legal queries, dispute management and claims-related issues.
  • Assisting with corporate transactions and providing advice on compliance, employment, tax and company secretarial matters.
  • Supporting the handling of customer complaints and wider legal and regulatory issues.
  • Building strong relationships across the business and providing clear, practical legal advice to senior stakeholders, including Board members.

About You

We're looking for someone who combines strong technical legal skills with commercial awareness and a collaborative approach. You will have:

  • At least 4 years' PQE gained in private practice or an in-house legal team.
  • Strong experience in commercial contracting and non-contentious commercial work.
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation and communication skills.
  • The confidence to advise senior stakeholders and influence decision-making.
  • A proactive, solutions-focused approach with the ability to manage a varied workload and make sound commercial judgements.

Experience within the insurance sector is highly desirable, particularly knowledge of the Lloyd's market, managing agencies and syndicate structures. However, we welcome applications from candidates with transferable commercial legal experience who are keen to develop their expertise in this specialist area.

Why Join?

This is an opportunity to become part of a highly regarded in-house legal team where you'll gain exposure to a broad range of legal matters and work closely with key decision-makers across the business. You'll play a meaningful role in supporting the continued success and growth of the organisation while developing your expertise within the specialist Lloyd's insurance market.

If you're looking for a varied in-house legal role where your commercial judgement and legal expertise will make a real impact, we'd love to hear from you.

Robert Walters Operations Limited is an employment business and employment agency and welcomes applications from all candidates
