Delivering cloud foundations for a platform serving millions of citizens
Introduction
We delivered the back-end cloud infrastructure and engineering foundations behind a nationally critical government digital platform. Working as specialist teams alongside the client's own design and user experience functions, we built the technology backbone that lets the platform operate securely at national scale for millions of users. The challenge
The programme was building a large-scale, multi-product digital ecosystem, with multiple teams delivering applications, data services, and integrations in parallel. The underlying infrastructure had to be secure, resilient, and capable of handling large volumes of traffic, while supporting many teams building at once without central infrastructure becoming a bottleneck. Because the platform stores and retrieves sensitive personal data, it also had to meet strict government security standards from the ground up.The solution
We delivered across three technology workstreams.
On the infrastructure platform, we built the cloud infrastructure and environments the system runs on, along with deployment pipelines and automation, developer access and onboarding, and secure environments for development and testing.
On the data platform, we designed the architecture for storing verified user data, applying strict security and threat-modelling standards, secure-by-design controls, penetration testing, and the systems that let applications retrieve that data safely.
On the integration workstream, we built the secure environments, integration patterns, and development environments that let departments connect and onboard their services to the platform.
These three workstreams are being delivered across two phases. Phase one is complete: it established the infrastructure platform, the data platform, the system architecture and integration model, development environments and documentation, and readied the platform for security assurance. Phase two is now underway, connecting government services to the platform: onboarding major departments, enabling live service integrations, and transitioning from development environments into live operational use.
