A leading independent accountancy firm in Birmingham is seeking an Interim Tax Manager to join their Private Client & Trust Services team. What you'll do:

As Interim Tax Manager in Birmingham’s Private Client & Trust Services team, you will play a central role in shaping the future of one of the firm’s key service lines. Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve leading compliance operations for personal and trust tax matters while delivering expert advisory services across inheritance tax planning, capital gains tax issues, offshore trusts, and international taxation. You will oversee critical reporting functions such as CGT returns and trust registration submissions while managing complex client relationships with empathy and professionalism. Success in this role requires you to foster collaboration within your team by coaching colleagues through workflow management, supporting recruitment efforts, conducting appraisals, and driving training initiatives. You will also contribute to business development by engaging with clients at networking events or participating in technical marketing campaigns. By continuously seeking ways to improve processes and maintain exceptional quality standards across all areas of responsibility, you will make a meaningful impact on both clients’ outcomes and the growth trajectory of the department.

  • Lead the Personal and Trust Tax compliance service by overseeing all aspects of tax return preparation and review for private clients and trusts.
  • Review and sign off Personal and Trust Tax Returns ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely submission in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Deliver comprehensive advisory work covering Trusts, Inheritance Tax (IHT), Capital Gains Tax (CGT), offshore trusts, and international tax matters tailored to each client’s needs.
  • Oversee 60-day CGT Returns, Trust Registration Service submissions, Trust IHT Returns, and Common Reporting Standard (CRS) reporting processes.
  • Liaise effectively with HMRC, clients, and other professional advisers to resolve complex queries and ensure seamless communication throughout engagements.
  • Manage complex client relationships by providing empathetic guidance on risk management and strategic tax planning.
  • Lead, coach, and develop the Private Client & Trust Services team through mentoring, workflow management, appraisals, recruitment support, and training initiatives.
  • Manage workflow including WIP (work in progress), billing processes, recoveries targets, utilisation rates, and quality standards within the department.
  • Drive continuous improvement by identifying opportunities for process enhancements and maintaining high standards of service delivery.
  • Support business development activities through networking events, client engagement initiatives, technical marketing contributions, and leadership projects.

What you bring:

  • CTA (Chartered Tax Adviser), ACA (Associate Chartered Accountant), or ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) qualification or equivalent experience is essential for this position.
  • Significant experience in Private Client Tax and Trust services demonstrating deep technical knowledge across personal tax matters.
  • Strong understanding of Personal Tax legislation including trusts, inheritance tax (IHT), capital gains tax (CGT), offshore trusts regulations, and international tax frameworks.
  • Previous experience leading teams within professional services environments with proven ability to coach colleagues through complex challenges.
  • Commercial awareness combined with excellent interpersonal skills enabling you to build lasting relationships with clients from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to manage complex client relationships sensitively while navigating risk management strategies effectively.
  • Experience overseeing compliance operations including workflow management (WIP), billing processes, recoveries targets, utilisation rates, and quality assurance protocols.
  • Business development experience involving networking activities or technical marketing contributions is highly desirable for this role.
  • International or Offshore Trust experience would be advantageous but not mandatory; willingness to learn new areas is valued.
  • Proven track record supporting recruitment efforts as well as appraisals or training initiatives within a collaborative team setting.

  • The role is hybrid with 3 days in the office and can be based in either Birmingham or Worcester
  • We are open to considering FTCs and Interim Day Rates (At this stage - it may change)
  • We are also considering various salary levels - it's important we know who is in the market. (£60k-£80k / £80k-£100k)
  • You must be fully Qualified! CTA, ACA or ACCA
