Part-Time Payroll Specialist
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dedicated Part-Time Payroll Specialist (22.5 hours per week) to join a highly respected organisation on a six-month fixed-term contract. This role is perfect for someone who thrives in a supportive, collaborative environment and is passionate about delivering an exceptional payroll experience. You will play a pivotal part in ensuring the seamless execution of payroll processes for over 1,200 colleagues across multiple payrolls, working closely with both internal teams and external partners
As a Part-Time Payroll Specialist, you will be instrumental in ensuring that every aspect of the monthly payroll cycle runs smoothly for a diverse workforce. Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve managing complex payroll transactions, providing expert advice to colleagues at all levels, and building effective partnerships both internally across finance, people, and operational teams as well as externally with outsourcing partners. You will be relied upon for your attention to detail when handling sensitive data.
Key duties include:
- Deliver end-to-end transactional and operational tasks for payroll, ensuring all activities are completed accurately and in full compliance with relevant legislation.
- Provide day-to-day advice and guidance to internal stakeholders on all payroll-related matters, acting as a reliable point of contact for queries and escalations.
- Build strong working relationships with third-party payroll service providers, proactively highlighting any operational issues that may affect the colleague experience to the Payroll Manager.
- Offer subject matter expertise on payroll topics, keeping up to date with legislative changes such as National Minimum Wage, Real Living Wage, Holiday Pay, and pension regulations.
- Support the administration of the pension scheme alongside the Payroll Administrator, ensuring strict adherence to auto-enrolment requirements and regulatory standards.
- Play an active role in setting up new benefits, ensuring all processes are compliant with HMRC guidelines and integrated seamlessly into payroll systems.
To excel as a Part-Time Payroll Specialist in this role, you will bring proven experience managing complex payroll cycles within large organisations or multi-payroll environments. Your technical skills will be complemented by your ability to communicate effectively with colleagues at all levels—whether explaining intricate details or resolving queries empathetically. You are comfortable navigating spreadsheets and translating numbers into meaningful reports that inform business decisions.
You will have experience in the following areas:
- Demonstrated expertise in end-to-end payroll calculation, processing, and up-to-date knowledge of relevant UK legislation including NMW, RLW, Holiday Pay, and pensions.
- A genuine passion for customer service with a relentless focus on delivering positive experiences for colleagues throughout the payroll process.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills that allow you to explain complex information clearly while building rapport across teams.
- Advanced proficiency in MS Excel or Google Sheets with the ability to translate numerical data into actionable insights for stakeholders.
- Experience using Cascade, Timegate or Brain software would be advantageous but is not essential; willingness to learn new systems is valued.
- A practical problem-solving mindset combined with analytical thinking enables you to anticipate challenges and develop effective solutions proactively.
