Lead Java Engineer – Fixed Income Trading

Robert Walters is recruiting a Lead Java Engineer for a leading global investment bank undergoing a major multi-year transformation of its Rates and Credit Fixed Income technology platform.

This is a senior hands-on engineering role focused on building real-time, high-performance trading applications, shaping platform architecture and helping modernise a technology estate designed to support the business for the next decade.

The Role

You will:

• Build modern, high-performance Java microservices supporting Rates and Credit trading workflows.
• Design scalable, maintainable solutions across a distributed trading architecture.
• Work directly with business and trading stakeholders to understand workflows and deliver impactful features.
• Design and build RESTful and event-driven APIs.
• Contribute to the modernisation and strategic direction of the Fixed Income technology platform.
• Champion engineering best practice across architecture, automated testing, CI/CD, code quality and code reviews.
• Help drive adoption of modern frameworks, tooling and engineering standards.

What We’re Looking For

• Strong commercial experience with modern Java.
• Experience building complex, high-performance or low-latency applications.
• Strong understanding of concurrency, memory management and reactive programming.
• Experience with distributed systems and event-driven architecture.
• Messaging technologies such as Kafka, Solace or RabbitMQ.
• REST APIs and event-driven services.
• SQL and relational database design.
• Production experience with Kubernetes and containerised applications.
• Strong knowledge of automated testing, CI/CD and engineering best practice.
• Ability to contribute to architectural and technical decision-making.

Experience within Rates, Credit, Fixed Income or wider Front Office trading technology would be highly advantageous.
