Lead Engineer – Java, Real-Time Trading & Fixed Income

Robert Walters is recruiting a Lead Engineer for a leading global investment bank undergoing a major multi-year modernisation of its Rates and Credit Fixed Income technology platform.

This is a senior hands-on engineering role focused on building real-time, high-performance trading applications and helping shape the architecture of a modern, scalable platform.

The Role

You will:

• Build modern, high-performance Java microservices supporting Rates and Credit trading workflows.
• Design and deliver full-stack solutions across backend services and real-time user interfaces.
• Work directly with business stakeholders to understand trading workflows and deliver impactful features.
• Influence platform architecture and contribute to the wider modernisation strategy.
• Promote engineering best practice across distributed systems, testing, CI/CD, code quality and code review.
• Build scalable RESTful and event-driven APIs within a production environment.

What We’re Looking For

• Strong modern Java experience, including concurrency, memory management and reactive programming.
• Experience building complex, high-performance applications.
• Strong frontend engineering experience with modern tooling such as Vite, Nx and Playwright.
• Experience building low-latency, event-driven UIs using technologies such as WebSockets, SSE and Rx.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems and event-driven architecture.
• Experience with messaging technologies such as Kafka, Solace or RabbitMQ.
• REST APIs, SQL and relational database design.
• Production experience with Kubernetes and containerised services.
• Strong engineering standards across automated testing, CI/CD and architectural decision-making.
