Senior Linux Engineer - 6 months FTC
A newly established Linux and container platform capability is being developed within EMEA to support modern, resilient and scalable infrastructure services. This role is critical to the design, build, and operation of that capability.
The Senior Linux Engineer is a hands-on technical position responsible for the engineering, stability, and operational readiness of enterprise Linux platforms underpinning containerised workloads, with a strong focus on OpenShift.
The role provides technical leadership through engineering expertise, ensuring platform resilience, adherence to engineering standards, and the safe onboarding of production workloads onto Linux and container platforms.
Working closely with platform, automation, security, and operations teams, the engineer contributes to global IT initiatives and helps ensure Linux and OpenShift platforms are secure, compliant, production-ready, and operationally robust.
Background
The Infrastructure function is undergoing a significant modernisation programme, with Platform Engineering playing a central role in enabling containerisation and cloud-native technologies across the organisation.
This role forms part of a newly established Linux and container platform function within EMEA, responsible for building and operating enterprise-grade Linux platforms supporting OpenShift and Kubernetes-based workloads. While the immediate focus is on on-premise OpenShift, the role will also contribute to hybrid and future cloud-aligned platform designs.
The Senior Linux Engineer will work closely with Automation, SRE, Security, and Global Infrastructure teams to ensure platforms meet the availability, performance, and regulatory expectations associated with enterprise-scale financial services environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate enterprise Linux platforms, primarily RHEL, supporting OpenShift and Kubernetes environments
- Act as a senior technical authority for Linux and container platform engineering within EMEA
- Engineer and maintain OpenShift clusters with a focus on stability, lifecycle management, performance, and upgrade readiness
- Ensure Linux platforms are built and maintained in line with security hardening standards and operational best practices
- Collaborate with Automation Engineering teams to deliver fully automated Linux and OpenShift platforms using Ansible and Git-based workflows
- Provide technical input into platform architecture, production readiness, and capacity planning activities
- Support the onboarding of production workloads onto OpenShift platforms, ensuring operational and monitoring requirements are met
- Participate in incident escalation, production support, and out-of-hours maintenance activities where required
- Act as a senior escalation point for complex Linux and container-related incidents
- Integrate Linux and OpenShift platforms with enterprise monitoring and logging tooling, including Splunk
- Work closely with Security teams to ensure compliance with audit, regulatory, and operational standards
- Produce and maintain high-quality technical documentation, standards, and operational runbooks
- Continuously develop technical expertise across Linux, Kubernetes, and container platform technologies
Technical Skills & Experience
Required Experience
- Strong hands-on experience engineering and operating enterprise Linux platforms, particularly RHEL
- Proven experience administering and supporting OpenShift within production or enterprise environments
- Strong understanding of Kubernetes architecture, concepts, and operational models
- Experience using Ansible for Linux automation and configuration management
- Experience working with Git-based workflows and CI/CD tooling
- Familiarity with enterprise monitoring and logging platforms such as Splunk
- Experience working within regulated, change-controlled environments
- Strong understanding of production operations, incident management, and platform resilience
