Save job

My client, a leading European transportation business, are looking to recruit a Financial Controller to join their UK finance team based in Liverpool.

This is a brand new Financial Controller position, and offers you the chance to work closely with the Head of Finance and CFO, supporting a busy department that is at the forefront of this evolving market.

The Financial Controller will play a pivotal role in maintaining financial integrity across multiple different entities, and will be a key member of the senior leadership team for a new area of this fast-growing European business.

What you'll do:

  • You will reconcile key balance sheet accounts such as stock, intercompany balances, grants, payroll, VAT and others to ensure their integrity and accuracy.
  • You will co-ordinate month-end closing activities by tracking progress and providing all necessary reporting and analysis to support group-wide financial close.
  • You will assume ownership of expense processes and procedures, ensuring accurate and timely payments to employees through the expense system in line with company policy.
  • You will oversee all expense postings to accounts monthly and prepare ad hoc analysis as required to support business needs.
  • You will reconcile various group bank accounts and finance providers throughout the month and at month end according to agreed timelines.
  • You will prepare weekly and monthly reports while providing general support to the Head of Finance and assisting with ad-hoc financial tasks or projects.
  • You will manage full credit control for designated entities including evaluating creditworthiness, setting limits, monitoring accounts, and ensuring timely payments to maintain healthy cash flow.
  • You will provide statistical reporting support to meet UK regulations by preparing accurate data reports required by regulatory bodies.
  • You will prepare files for auditors including schedules, evidence, and backup documentation for both internal audits and external bodies as needed.
  • You will identify and implement process improvements that drive efficiency within the finance function while proactively supporting wider business initiatives.

What you bring:

  • Qualified Accountant status (ACCA, ACA or CIMA) is essential for this role.
  • A minimum of 5-10 years’ experience in accounting roles demonstrates your depth of knowledge in financial operations.
  • Strong understanding of debits and credits alongside general accounting principles enables you to handle complex reconciliations confidently.
  • Excellent analytical skills paired with advanced proficiency in Excel and accounting software allow you to deliver insightful financial analysis.
  • Proven experience processing monthly accounts, completing bank reconciliations, balance sheet reconciliations, and payroll processing is vital.
  • Meticulous attention to accuracy ensures high standards are maintained across all financial reporting activities.
  • Curiosity and an inquisitive mindset help you grasp complex processes quickly while understanding their broader implications.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills enable you to build effective relationships with colleagues at all levels.
  • Exceptional organisational abilities allow you to manage multiple priorities simultaneously without compromising deadlines or quality.
  • Demonstrated capacity for collaborative teamwork combined with flexibility means you can adapt readily when supporting others within the finance team.
