What you'll do:

In the capacity of Private Client Solicitor based in Exeter, you will:

  • Oversee a varied caseload involving estate administration for high-value estates, including those with business and agricultural interests, as well as lifetime planning for affluent individuals and business clients.
  • Provide authoritative guidance on succession planning and matters concerning elderly clients, ensuring all legal obligations are fulfilled with sensitivity and decorum.
  • Cultivate robust collaborative relationships with internal departments such as Family, Real Estate, Corporate, and Contentious Probate/Trusts to facilitate cross-referrals and deliver comprehensive client service.
  • Support team leadership by engaging in management activities, supervising junior colleagues, upholding Lexcel compliance standards, and assisting with daily operational responsibilities.
  • Participate proactively in business development initiatives aimed at expanding the client base and enhancing the standing of the Private Client team within the broader market.
  • Contribute meaningfully to the ongoing evaluation and refinement of team processes, precedents, and working practices to ensure they remain responsive to evolving client requirements.
  • Deliver exemplary client care by maintaining clear communication throughout all stages of casework and responding promptly to any queries or concerns.
  • Utilise IT systems proficiently, including case management software, to ensure meticulous record-keeping and efficient workflow management.
  • Engage in firm-wide initiatives designed to support local communities and advance social responsibility objectives.
  • Demonstrate dedication to continuous professional learning by attending relevant training sessions and remaining abreast of developments in private client law.

What you bring:

To excel as a Private Client Solicitor in this distinguished role, you will bring considerable expertise acquired over several years’ dedicated practice within private client law. Your established track record encompasses advising on sophisticated estate administration issues as well as guiding affluent individuals through nuanced succession planning considerations. You flourish when collaborating—valuing collective input whilst providing guidance informed by your own experience. Your approachable manner ensures clients feel supported throughout their engagement; meanwhile your organisational prowess allows you to balance multiple priorities seamlessly. Familiarity with contemporary legal technologies ensures adaptability as new tools emerge. Above all else, your commitment to delivering exemplary service is evident whether mentoring colleagues or engaging directly with clients navigating significant life events.

  • You are a qualified solicitor or Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (FCILEX) possessing no fewer than five years’ post-qualification experience specialising in private client matters.
  • Ideally you hold STEP accreditation or possess equivalent expertise evidencing advanced proficiency in trusts and estate planning (preferred but not obligatory).
  • Your professional history includes independent management of your own caseload whilst flourishing within a collaborative team setting.
  • You exhibit commercial acumen coupled with a sincere interest in personal growth—both professionally and personally—in alignment with the firm’s values.
  • Your interpersonal abilities are exemplary; you communicate with clarity across diverse audiences whilst demonstrating empathy during sensitive circumstances.
  • Organisation is intrinsic to your approach; you adeptly manage competing priorities without compromising
  • Proficiency with information technology systems—including case management platforms—is essential for accurate record maintenance and streamlined workflows.
  • You have experience supervising junior colleagues or supporting leadership functions within a legal context.
  • A proactive disposition enables you to offer constructive suggestions for process improvement or new business development.
