The latest Robert Walters UK Jobs Index revealed that vacancies for accounting and finance professionals rose by 24% across the UK in the first quarter of 2016 compared to the same period last year.

Despite a degree of uncertainty in the financial markets, employers across a range of industries and sectors continued to recruit professionals to support the business growth in the first three months of 2016.

Daniel Connors, Associate Director for Accounting and Finance recruitment comments, “the figures for the first quarter are encouraging, suggesting that businesses are looking to invest in top finance and accounting talent.”

Spike in mid-senior level roles

“The bulk of the roles we are seeing are for mid and senior level professionals. This represents a move away from from demand for more junior, newly qualified level roles that we traditionally see in high volumes,” Connors continued.

“As a result of this shift in demand, employers are now facing a shortage of suitably qualified candidates.”

“In particular, small to medium sized businesses are looking to recruit at these more senior levels, with high demand for finance managers, finance controllers and group financial controllers being apparent."

Industry sectors driving demand

Increased consumer spending has seen employers in the media and technology, e-commerce, property and hospitality sectors benefit over the first quarter of 2016.

As a result, businesses in these sectors are looking to expand their finance teams, taking on staff responsible for finance “core” functions, ensuring that they are carried out efficiently and to a rigorous standard to safeguard the sustainable growth of the business.

“There has been a noticeable shift towards demand for finance professionals who have “core” finance skills such as financial controllers and finance managers”

Connors continues, “in those sectors which are experiencing growth, we have seen businesses looking to recruit for roles related to core finance functions.”

“This has created a favourable climate for finance professionals with strong technical skills and a track record of maintaining these functions to a high standard.”
