Management Accountant

What you'll do:
As a Management Accountant in this forward-thinking organisation based in Manchester, you will play a pivotal role in managing day-to-day finance operations for an ambitious games development studio. Your responsibilities will span preparing detailed management accounts, conducting thorough reconciliations, drafting insightful commentary on financial performance, calculating royalties, managing asset capitalisation schedules, handling intercompany transactions, supporting tax relief claims, overseeing payroll changes in partnership with HR, processing VAT returns, coordinating payment runs, and reviewing junior team members’ work.
* Prepare and analyse monthly profit and loss statements and balance sheets as part of the management accounts process, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
* Finalise balance sheet reconciliations and month-end schedules for review by the Head of Finance, maintaining high standards of financial integrity.
* Draft insightful monthly commentary and analysis to support financial results, providing clear explanations for variances and trends.
* Calculate game royalty splits accurately and produce detailed monthly royalty statements for stakeholders.
* Manage the capitalisation of development costs while maintaining an up-to-date amortisation schedule for assets.
* Perform intercompany reconciliations across multiple entities within the group to ensure consistency and compliance.
* Collaborate with internal teams to track time spent on development projects for Video Games Tax Relief (VGTR) claims, supporting accurate submissions.
* Provide year-end numbers and supporting documentation for dormant entities as well as those claiming VGTR only.
* Complete quarterly VAT returns for the group in line with statutory requirements, ensuring timely submission.
* Oversee weekly payment runs according to cash flow forecasts while reviewing Finance Assistant’s postings such as purchase invoices, bank reconciliations, sales invoices, and credit card transactions.
What you bring:
Your background as a Management Accountant will demonstrate proven experience in preparing management accounts within a commercial setting—ideally one that values creativity or operates within the technology or media sectors. You will bring advanced spreadsheet abilities alongside familiarity with accounting software such as Xero or similar platforms. A keen eye for detail combined with analytical thinking allows you to provide valuable insights into financial performance. Your commitment to professional development is evident through your pursuit of ACCA/ACA/CIMA qualifications.
* Part-qualified status with ACCA, ACA or CIMA demonstrating commitment to furthering your professional development through recognised accountancy qualifications.
* At least two years’ experience in an Assistant Management Accountant or Management Accountant position within a commercial environment where you have taken responsibility for core accounting tasks.
* Advanced Excel skills including VLOOKUPs and pivot tables enabling you to efficiently analyse large data sets and produce accurate reports.
* Familiarity with Xero accounting software is beneficial but not essential; willingness to learn new systems is highly valued.
* Proven ability to prepare management accounts including profit and loss statements and balance sheets with minimal supervision.
* Experience finalising balance sheet reconciliations and producing month-end schedules ready for senior review.
* Experience performing intercompany reconciliations across multiple entities ensuring group-wide accuracy.
* Ability to manage VAT returns and payroll journals while supporting P11D submissions by gathering relevant data.
