Financial Controller
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Financial Controller to join a respected multi-academy trust based in London. This pivotal role offers you the chance to make a meaningful difference in education by ensuring robust financial management and supporting the trust’s mission of delivering outstanding outcomes for students. As Financial Controller, you will be at the heart of the finance function, working closely with senior leaders and school business managers to drive financial stability, regulatory compliance, and best value for public funds.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the Chief Financial Officer, Head Teachers, and Academy Business Managers to develop and manage annual and three-year budgets that align with strategic objectives.
- Prepare, review, and deliver accurate monthly management accounts and timely financial reports for both individual schools and the overall trust to support informed decision-making.
- Utilise key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor school and trust performance, identify areas for improvement, and implement effective plans.
- Monitor cash flow across the trust, providing regular updates to ensure financial stability and proactive resource management.
- Own and manage the timetable of financial activity throughout the year while maintaining robust internal controls.
- Maintain and develop comprehensive financial manuals and procedures to ensure users have clear guidance.
- Ensure full compliance with all statutory requirements set by relevant authorities.
- Lead external audit processes and support internal audit procedures, driving improvements based on recommendations.
- Manage finance team members by providing guidance, direction, and fostering a culture of excellence.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA and CIMA)
- Experience in business partnering with senior leaders or budget holders within educational or not-for-profit sectors.
- Proven track record in improving controls or processes within finance functions.
- Comfortable interpreting accounting standards and researching technical guidance.
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements specific to multi-academy trusts or educational institutions.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with financial software systems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for conveying complex information clearly to non-financial colleagues.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
