National increase in risk jobs

According to the Robert Walters UK Jobs Index, there has been an increase in the number of risk vacancies, indicating higher demand for risk professionals.

Northwest of England saw an increase of 24% while London saw a rise of 11% over the same period.

Market risk in particular saw a spike in the number of permanent positions around regulatory projects and change, a field usually dominated by contract roles.

These teams have become increasingly important given the regulators' continued focus on capital usage.

“Following a slow start to the quarter, attributable to the bonus season, the risk job market has picked up significantly. Increased pressure from regulators has been the catalyst for most employers to expand their risk teams” says Chad Lawson, Associate Director of risk recruitment at Robert Walters.

Widespread demand for risk professionals

"Risk professionals at Associate and AVP level are most in demand, particularly in the market risk and quant fields," says Chad Lawson, Associate Director of risk recruitment at Robert Walters.

Research showed demand for candidates with asset management experience, especially those with familiarity with liaising with traders regarding breaches and appetite in order to apply these skills to investment risk roles.

Furthermore, business control specialists responsible for the day-to-day management of operational risk are required to embed emerging risk components in existing operational risk frameworks.

While financial services are a sector typically associated with London, the demand for risk professionals in particular shows that many companies are committed to expanding their presence in the North
