We spoke with James Akrigg, Head of Technology for Partners at Microsoft, about apprentiships and how they can benefit companies today.

Apprenticeships are re-emerging as an effective option for organisations looking to on-board staff but are having trouble coming across the required skill sets.

“Sometimes companies will find they they can’t find the skills they need. This is becoming more frequent [in the market], and is especially noticeable with new technologies. Sometimes the best answer is to create the skilled staff from scratch," James said. 

James continued, “Apprenticeships can be an innovative way forward when traditional recruitment methods don’t work. They allow the industry to embrace new technologies while effectively building in a new level of skilled candidates.” Alongside mentorship of currently employees, apprenticeships provide a company a structured way to create a leadership succession plan within the business.

“Some companies set up academies to bring in fresh staff. Alongside the technology they learn the business. This helps staff take on more of a 360-degree role, and provides a path to leadership in the future,” James continued.

Government assistance

"We are seeing the government putting more effort and money into apprenticeships," James said.
