Risk and Compliance Lawyer An exceptional opportunity has arisen for a qualified lawyer to join a prestigious international law firm as a Risk and Compliance Lawyer within their Office of General Counsel in London. This role is ideal for someone seeking to transition from fee-earning work into an influential in-house position, or for those looking to further develop their expertise in risk management, regulatory frameworks, and data protection. You will be at the heart of the firm's efforts to uphold the highest standards of professional conduct, working closely with partners, lawyers, and business teams across the organisation. The environment is highly collaborative, offering you the chance to contribute meaningfully to policy development, compliance initiatives, and knowledge sharing. With exposure to a wide range of regulatory and ethical matters, this position provides a unique platform for career growth and personal development within a supportive team that values your input and commitment. * Play a pivotal role in shaping and maintaining the firm's approach to regulatory compliance, professional ethics, and data privacy by collaborating with colleagues at all levels. * Gain broad exposure to complex legal frameworks including SRA Standards & Regulations, GDPR, anti-bribery laws, and market abuse regulations while supporting both internal stakeholders and client-facing teams. * Enjoy a collaborative culture that encourages knowledge sharing, continuous learning, and flexible working opportunities designed to support your professional growth and work-life balance. What you'll do: As a Risk and Compliance Lawyer based in London within the Office of General Counsel, you will immerse yourself in a diverse array of responsibilities that are central to safeguarding the firm's reputation and operational integrity. Your day-to-day activities will involve advising colleagues on complex regulatory issues while ensuring that internal policies remain robustly aligned with evolving legal standards. You will play an instrumental part in coordinating key compliance exercises such as practising certificate renewals and corporate filings. In addition to policy development work—where your attention to detail will help shape guidance notes on critical topics like anti-bribery—you will also be involved in maintaining essential registers for gifts or hospitality. Your expertise will be called upon when reviewing data privacy documentation or responding to client audits. By contributing to training programmes and keeping abreast of industry changes through horizon-scanning activities, you will ensure that both you and your colleagues remain well-informed about emerging risks. This multifaceted role offers you the chance to make a tangible impact across multiple facets of risk management while enjoying ongoing opportunities for learning within a truly collaborative environment. * Advise partners, lawyers, and business services teams on firm policy issues, professional ethics queries, and regulatory requirements such as SRA Standards & Regulations and GDPR obligations. * Coordinate the annual practising certificate renewal process by managing communications, monitoring declarations, and gathering information for submission to relevant authorities. * Maintain the firm's SRA account while assisting with corporate filings and ensuring accurate submissions on behalf of the organisation. * Support the firm's ICO data protection registration processes by providing guidance on compliance requirements and best practices. * Review, update, and draft internal policies, guidance notes, and compliance alerts covering areas such as failure to prevent offences, Market Abuse Regulation, anti-bribery measures, and corruption prevention. * Respond promptly to queries from business teams regarding compliance policies and related operational processes. * Oversee the maintenance of the London office gifts and hospitality register while creating walls and insider lists as required by regulation. * Assist with reviewing and updating data privacy policies, privacy notices, records of processing activities, legitimate interests assessments, transfer impact assessments, and due diligence for new vendors or technologies. * Advise on contractual arrangements including Data Processing Agreements and international data transfer terms; support responses to data subject requests or incidents involving data privacy. * Review client engagement documentation such as NDAs or supplier questionnaires; assist with audit assessment responses covering corporate policy or regulatory matters. * Contribute to training initiatives by developing content for ethics or data privacy sessions; coordinate compliance alerts; support horizon-scanning for legal developments impacting risk frameworks; maintain comprehensive resources on the OGC intranet page.

What you bring:

To excel as a Risk and Compliance Lawyer in this leading international law firm’s Office of General Counsel team in London, you will bring not only technical expertise but also strong interpersonal abilities that foster collaboration across departments. Your background should include hands-on experience navigating complex regulatory environments—ideally within another top-tier law firm or sophisticated in-house setting—where you have advised on matters ranging from professional ethics through data protection. Your capacity for clear communication will enable you to translate intricate legal requirements into practical guidance notes or engaging training materials suitable for audiences at all levels. A keen eye for detail ensures accuracy whether you are preparing official submissions or reviewing sensitive contractual documents. Your enthusiasm for staying ahead of industry trends means you are always ready to adapt policies proactively rather than reactively. Above all else, your approachable manner makes you a trusted advisor who supports others’ understanding while upholding rigorous standards throughout every aspect of your work.

  • Qualified solicitor (England & Wales) with demonstrable post-qualification experience gained either in private practice or an in-house legal function.
  • Proven track record advising on regulatory compliance matters including SRA Standards & Regulations as well as GDPR requirements within a legal services context.
  • Experience drafting or updating internal policies relating to professional ethics, anti-bribery measures, market abuse regulations or similar areas of risk management.
  • Familiarity with managing practising certificate renewals or similar regulatory submissions is highly desirable for this position.
  • Strong understanding of data privacy principles including preparation of legitimate interests assessments, transfer impact assessments, vendor due diligence processes or incident response protocols.
  • Ability to review client engagement documentation such as NDAs or Data Processing Agreements; experience responding to audit assessment questionnaires is advantageous.
  • Excellent written communication skills demonstrated through policy drafting or training material development; ability to convey complex concepts clearly across all levels of seniority.
  • Collaborative approach with proven interpersonal skills enabling effective partnership with partners, lawyers, business services teams or external stakeholders alike.
  • Meticulous attention to detail combined with organisational skills necessary for managing multiple concurrent projects under tight deadlines when required.
  • A proactive attitude towards continuous learning—particularly around horizon-scanning for new developments in law or regulation—and willingness to share knowledge through training initiatives.
