Stonegate Legal has partnered with Robert Walters to recruit a Contentious Trusts and Probate Director to join its expanding team in Leeds.
About Stonegate Legal
Stonegate Legal is a specialist private client solicitor firm, proud to be based in Leeds and provide high calibre legal advice to clients across the Yorkshire and Lincolnshire region.
Formed in 2014 by director Daniel Lumb, former head of private client at Lupton Fawcett LLP, the firm is dedicated to the protection of their clients' family wealth and their services are built around that objective. In addition to the usual private client offerings such as wills, probate, tax planning and trusts, Daniel is well known for his specialist Court of Protection work and is a member of the Public Guardian's Professional Panel of Deputies. Examples of recent Court of Protection work undertaken by the firm include:
- Vulnerable adult abduction cases, addressing financial abuse of P and their removal from jurisdiction by the abuser
- Multiple financial abuse cases requiring recovery actions (and possession proceedings) against financial abusers, third party institutions and professional advisers
- High value recovery of care fee funding from Clinical Commissioning Groups and local authorities
Over last four years Stonegate Legal has enjoyed rapid and organic growth, becoming not only one of the leading private client and specialist Court of Protection firms in Yorkshire, but also developing a strong network of relationships with other professional advisors across the region including accountants, independent financial advisors, Independent Mental Capacity Advocates (IMCA) and leading law firms. They also work with many charities supporting their clients with philanthropy and providing training on a broad range of popular subjects in the sector.
“Daniel Lumb and the team at Stonegate Law are our solicitors of choice for elderly client work. They are experts in this field and are also extremely compassionate. They are genuinely lovely people and are committed to providing the highest level of care to both their clients and also their employees.” – Head of Family, Legal 500 rated firm
Contentious Trusts and Probate Director
Stonegate Legal is looking to expand its well-respected team with the appointment of a new Contentious Trusts and Probate Director. The primary responsibility for this newly created role will be the building of a Contentious Trusts and Probate Team to work with and alongside the core private client & court of protection business.
Naturally, the role requires someone with substantial experience in handling trusts and probate litigation matters; the Directors feel that someone with 7+ years PQE* should be well suited to handle the responsibility of the position.
In addition to the technical skills required, the role requires a candidate with exceptional communication skills. Putting the client first is at the heart of Stonegate Legal’s success. Acting for clients, including those who lack capacity to make specific decisions, in such an emotive area requires someone that can handle the robust negotiations and family communication, whilst also being empathetic and demonstrating an understanding of the client’s needs.
Business development and networking is something that should come naturally at this level. Whilst “a following” is not a prerequisite, it is expected that the successful lawyer will have their own network of professional contacts and be excited about the opportunity to work collaboratively with the other directors to generate their own instructions for Contentious Trust and Probate Cases.
This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced Contentious Trusts and Probate Lawyer to head up and grown their own team within an innovative and progressive firm, benefiting from a positive work-life balance without compromising on quality of work.
The position comes with a highly completive salary, pension and a range of other benefits including free parking at offices easily accessible from Leeds, Harrogate, Wetherby, York, East Yorkshire and South Yorkshire via the A1(M).

*Please note that PQE and NQ levels are only mentioned as a guide and do not preclude applications from Trust and Probate litigation solicitors that have more or less experience and feel that they meet the above criteria.
