The 2017 Robert Walters Global Salary Survey has revealed that salaries for junior tax professionals will rise by up to 14% in 2017.

In light of increased scrutiny from the media and from regulators, businesses have made ensuring transparency in their tax accounting practices a priority. This has led employers to look to secure top talent within their tax teams to ensure that strategies to deliver transparency are implemented effectively.

“The Panama papers leak in January of last year saw businesses place a renewed emphasis on ensuring transparency and openness in their tax policies,” said Lynley Hall, Manager at Robert Walters.

Junior level professionals in demand

Demand for tax professionals has increased throughout the year across banking and financial services firms and employers in commerce and industry. Businesses are particularly looking to take on staff at the junior level, building robust tax teams that can ensure delivery of transparency strategies is carried out effectively.

“Salaries for international tax managers have also seen significant growth, with professionals with in-demand experience seeing increases of 6%,” continued Lynley Hall.

Both technical and soft skills sought after

Demand for tax professionals has increased throughout the year across banking and financial services firms and employers in commerce and industry.

With tax transparency becoming a growing priority among employers, businesses are looking to take on specialists in these roles who can demonstrate strong core skills while also being able to collaborate effectively, influencing other stakeholders within the business.

“With tax policy becoming a much higher profile part of the business for many firms, employers are increasingly looking for tax specialists with strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as technical competencies,” said Hall.

“With tax functions needing to liaise regularly with other stakeholders within the business in order to ensure transparency both internally and externally, professionals who can demonstrate the ability to collaborate effectively will be particularly sought after.”
