Executive assistant jobs are popular, but what exactly do they entail?
We spoke to an executive assistant at a leading international cable company to get an insight into the job.
What does your current role involve?
I currently work for our London Executive VP and our CFO. As with most Executive Assistant roles, no two days are the same and I work on several ad hoc tasks daily. The main part of my job is acting as a liaison for the directors when they are not in the office, and managing their diaries wherever they are globally.
What skills must a good executive assistant have?
Personal Assistants and Executive Assistants can turn their hand to work across multiple industries. Key skills include a willing attitude, strong organisation skills, adaptability and good communication skills. Relationships are so important and good working relationships will help you get any difficult done - especially when you are on a short timescale. Things change regularly, quickly and at short notice so you always need to be good at anticipating your colleagues needs, no matter the situation, and be resilient and persevere to get jobs done.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I previously worked in client relations and at one point had over six hundred clients, and I was travelling a lot. I enjoy my current position because it allows me to feel grounded, stable and settled. For the most part I am able to switch off when I leave the office, which allows for a good work/life balance.

What advice would you give to an aspiring executive assistant?
Dont be unwilling to do the hard and menial tasks. Although not everyone is good at giving praise, being willing to muck in and working hard gets noticed. Know when to ask for guidance and own up to your mistakes, thats how you will learn and gain experience.
