What does your current role involve? 

I work in Derivatives Client Services for the Global Product Finance function within a large investment bank. I am account manager for hedge funds which deal in global futures.

The job involves both finance responsibilities, such as margining, and technology integration work, such as data conciliation. Ultimately, I act as an intermediary between clients and internal functions within the bank. 

Good communication skills are vital for the role as it is very people focused. Attention to detail, flexibility and the ability to meet deadlines while working under pressure are also important.

What skills does someone in your job need to be successful? 

Good communication skills are vital for the role as it is very people focused. Attention to detail, flexibility and the ability to meet deadlines while working under pressure are also important. In addition, being highly motivated is a key part of the job – if someone gives you a task, you need to take ownership of it and ensure it is completed on time. 

What attracted you to working in the banking & financial services industry? 

I have worked in financial services since 2000 when I completed an internship at an investment bank. I really like the fact it is pressurised and fast paced as I feel this type of environment gets the best out of me.

What advice would you give to someone looking to work in the banking & financial services sector? 

As it has become more popular, there is a lot of competition for jobs now. Undergraduates need something that will differentiate themselves from others at a similar level, so those able to get themselves onto internship programmes are at a definite advantage. A business and economics background can also help, while specific technology skills – such as programming and systems knowledge – are generally well thought of by employers.

How would you describe your experiences of Robert Walters?
