Team secretary jobs can be demanding and typically involve a lot of multitasking.
We spoke to a contract team secretary to find out more about the role.
What do team secretary jobs involve?
It is a very varied role – for example, I do anything from ordering stationary to setting up international video conference calls, designing presentation layouts, and putting together agendas for any of my team going abroad.
Why did you choose to work as a team secretary?
I felt it fit well with my skills and personality. I love working with and helping people and I find the work interesting.
How did you get to where you are?
I got my first job eight years ago as a secretary at a quantity surveyor. Since then, I’ve had a number of contract support jobs at law firms, architectural practices and construction companies, ranging in length from a couple of months upwards. My longest contract was with a construction company responsible for redeveloping the Eurostar terminal and lasted for three years.
Benefits of contracting
The experience I have gained by working in so many different environments means I now find it really easy to fit in when I start in a new role. Over time, it has also enabled me to build up a portfolio of really good references, which has obviously helped me when applying for jobs.

What advice would you give to an aspiring team secretary?
Get as much experience in as many different environments as possible. You also need to be prepared to work hard to succeed. Although people may feel they don’t need them, advanced courses in PowerPoint, Word and Excel have been really useful for me.
