A day in the life of a senior legal secretary

Working for a leading law firm is fast-paced, exciting and rewarding work.

We speak to a Senior Legal Secretary, working in one of the UK's largest firms, about what a typical day in the office looks like for her and how she chose her ideal career.

What interested you about working for a law firm?

“I’ve always worked in some fashion of administrative work. Prior to working in a law firm, I interned in a professional services firm. I enjoyed the organisational aspects of the job but knew I had an interest in law.

I originally considered training to be a solicitor, but the long hours were not appealing. I value my work-life balance and working as a legal secretary allows me to have the best of both worlds. I get to work in law every day, and although there are the occasional days I stay late to help the Partners, I can usually have time to enjoy my evenings with friends and family.”

A typical day on the job

Many people assume working as a secretary for one business is the same as any business. This is very different when working for a law firm as there are aspects of the job very unique to the law sector.

"My day can range from undertaking administrative duties to working on a brief or helping a solicitor in training research a case for a client. The day-to-day changes all the time, and more frequently than not I am working directly on the law-based aspects of the job. Its this work that makes the work really interesting to me.”

Key skills of a legal secretary

Working at a law firm requires meticulous organisational skills and attention to detail. It also requires the ability to work on multiple projects and cases at one time.

"I would also say being trustworthy is important. I handle confidential information all day and if the Partners did not trust me I would not be able to adequately support them.”

Career progression in the law sector

With sustained growth in the market, more law firms are significantly increasing support on their teams. This opens up room for career growth and progression.

“I’ve found that if you do your job well, are proactive and add value into your job you are usually rewarded and promoted within the firm. I started as a receptionist originally but quickly became a team secretary then senior legal secretary. Even if there is not a promotion available, you can be incentivised well if you work for a law firm who really value their employees.”
