The post holder will be a qualified accountant who will provide specialist technical financial information and advice and act as a finance lead for specific, complex work areas including projects and programmes.
The main tasks of the Senior Accountant:
• Technical specialisms may include a significant role in the completion of the statutory accounts, financial advice and support for major capital projects, key cost improvement programmes and project work which is likely to involve cross-organisational arrangements
• To undertake a workload of providing financial management information and advice to stakeholders including staff, and reporting directly to the Group Accountant
• Responsible for the effective and efficient management of staff as required
• Strategy planning and supporting services in developing savings options or carrying out service reviews
• Responsible for reporting information on statutory returns, and non-statutory returns as requested in line with time limits prescribed
• In conjunction with the Group Accountant, continual review of processes to ensure the Financial Management System is fully utilised and the most efficient practices are in place
• Supporting Service Delivery Managers and budget holders to understand and use the financial information available, including the promotion of ‘self-service’
You will be working alongside the Group Accountant in order to agree on actions and responses to queries and to consult on proposed actions where these have a material effect on financial performance or is a staff related issue.
The post holder will have direct line management responsibility for a small number of staff and will be expected to take a lead and therefore make decisions with regards to the way work is carried out regarding adherence to policy or regulations.
The skills required from the Senior Accountant:
• Proactive approach to progressing and resolving financial issues appropriate to the job role
• Good interpersonal skills providing effective customer support
• Able to supervise and deploy staff
• Ability to analyse and interpret financial information to identify financial implications
• Ability to undertake complex costings and assessment of financial implications arising
• Understand the concept of Value for Money
• Good communication skills and the ability to present complex financial information and outcomes in a format accessible to the user
• Produce accurate and robust work to required deadlines
• Prioritise effectively whilst dealing with competing demands and a challenging workload
• Good ICT skills for reporting including a good understanding of all systems available and effective use of these
• Proven negotiating skills and the ability to influence with tact and diplomacy
