Accounts Manager
A rapidly expanding top 20 accountancy firm is seeking an Accounts Manager to join their South London office. This unique opportunity is ideal for someone who thrives on technical excellence, enjoys supporting colleagues, and prefers focusing on quality and compliance over managing a large client portfolio. As the technical lead and escalation point for the office, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring that all accounts and reporting meet the highest standards of accuracy.
You will be empowered to shape technical processes, drive improvements, and nurture the professional growth of your team, all within a supportive environment that values continuous development and collaboration. With generous benefits, ongoing training opportunities, and a culture built on teamwork and shared success, this is your chance to make a meaningful impact while advancing your career in a respected organisation.
- Take ownership of technical leadership by acting as the final gatekeeper for all statutory and management accounts produced by the team, ensuring compliance with best practice and regulatory requirements.
- Enjoy a collaborative environment where your expertise supports colleagues’ development through guidance on complex judgements, technical challenges, and process improvement initiatives.
- Benefit from flexible working opportunities, comprehensive pension scheme, group life assurance, profit share bonus, employee assistance programme, regular training sessions, and access to an employee benefits portal offering cashback and vouchers.
What you'll do:
As an Accounts Manager based in South London, your day-to-day responsibilities will centre around being the trusted technical authority within the office. You will review complex financial statements with precision, identify risks before they escalate, and provide invaluable support to both senior managers and junior staff. Your role will involve collaborating closely with Partners to uphold rigorous standards while also driving improvements in how work is delivered across cloud-based platforms like Xero. By facilitating training sessions and sharing your expertise generously with others, you will help foster a culture of excellence where everyone feels supported in their professional growth. Success in this position means not only safeguarding quality but also empowering those around you to achieve their best work.
- Act as the primary technical escalation point for the office on all matters relating to accounting, reporting, and compliance, providing clear guidance to colleagues at every level.
- Review statutory accounts and management accounts meticulously to ensure they are technically accurate, consistent across portfolios, and compliant with current regulations.
- Identify potential technical risk areas early in the process and ensure these are appropriately documented and resolved in line with internal policies.
- Support Accounts Managers and junior staff by offering expert advice on complex judgements, unusual transactions, or edge cases that require careful consideration.
- Own and continually improve technical standards by updating checklists, review processes, and documentation to reflect best practice.
- Drive consistency of output across Xero-based portfolios by standardising procedures and sharing knowledge throughout the team.
- Lead training sessions to upskill colleagues from a technical perspective, fostering a culture of learning and continuous improvement.
- Work closely with Partners to mitigate regulatory, reputational, and client risk through proactive problem-solving and robust quality controls.
- Contribute actively to process improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing efficiency without compromising quality or compliance.
What you bring:
Your proven background as an Accounts Manager or similar role within an accountancy practice equips you with deep expertise in reviewing financial statements for accuracy and compliance. Your interpersonal skills allow you to collaborate effectively with colleagues at all levels, offering guidance on challenging issues while maintaining a nurturing atmosphere. You bring not only advanced technical abilities but also empathy for those learning new concepts or facing difficult decisions. Your familiarity with cloud-based systems such as Xero ensures you can contribute meaningfully to process improvements that benefit the whole team. Above all else, your commitment to high standards makes you an indispensable resource for maintaining quality across every aspect of the office’s output.
- Minimum five years’ experience working within an accountancy practice environment where you have developed strong technical skills.
- ACA or ACCA qualification (preferred), demonstrating your commitment to professional standards in accounting.
- Comprehensive knowledge of technical accounting principles coupled with confidence exercising sound professional judgement when faced with complex scenarios.
- Exceptional attention to detail combined with a structured approach that prioritises risk awareness at every stage of the review process.
- Ability to challenge work constructively in a polite manner while raising issues early for resolution without disrupting team harmony.
- Excellent written communication skills that enable you to explain intricate technical matters clearly to both specialists and non-specialists alike.
- A genuine enthusiasm for supporting others’ development by sharing knowledge rather than focusing solely on personal client relationships.
- Experience using Xero or similar cloud accounting environments which enables you to drive consistency across digital portfolios.
