Assistant Accountant (Fixed-Term / Year-End Support)

Reports to: Senior Accountant

salary: £40k-£42k perm equivalent

About the Role

We are seeking an Assistant Accountant to support our Senior Accountant in the run-up to and past–31 March year end. This is a hands-on role within a small and collaborative finance team, playing a key part in ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of our financial processes.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare and complete balance sheet reconciliations.
• Perform bank reconciliations and manage associated queries.
• Maintain rent ledger control and resolve related issues.
• Process the weekly rent / housing management system interface.
• Run weekly payment batches and process ad hoc bank payments.
• Complete cash book postings and maintain accurate financial records.
• Post payroll journals and assist with related accounting entries.
• Manage pre‑paid debit card top-ups and upload credit card transactions.
• Prepare and post various month end journals.
• Support the preparation of VAT returns (experience desirable).
• Provide general finance support and assist with year-end tasks as needed.

Skills & Experience

Essential

• Strong finance experience in a similar accounting or assistant accountant role.
• Good understanding of core accounting processes such as reconciliations, journals, and ledger management.
• High attention to detail and strong organisational skills.
• Confidence working independently as well as part of a small team.

Desirable

• Experience using Unit4 (Agresso).
• Experience preparing or supporting VAT returns.
