The buy side remains more active in the recruitment market than the sell side and we are seeing some interesting job opportunities across the investment management sector.

Investment Management Operations

We have seen a notable shift in the investment management operations jobs market lately. With operational and trade support jobs increasingly being outsourced, we are seeing more demand for vendor relationship management, projects, client services and reporting professionals.

Which professionals have firms been hiring?
In fund management, we are seeing most demand at the mid-level; graduates with 2-4 years’ experience and end-to-end process knowledge in particular are really sought-after. Derivatives specialists are also being hired due to increased regulatory pressure. The ETF space has also shown notable growth recently, so if you have experience in this area you will be in demand at the moment.

Hedge funds have been hiring project specialists as these firms grow and look for people who can help streamline their operations processes, while junior-level business analysts have been sought-after by private wealth management firms. Read more on skills in demand.

Investment Management Finance

As with the operations jobs market, we are seeing more demand from the buy side for finance professionals than the sell side. Overall, the jobs market for accountants looking for new roles in the investment management sector is looking reasonably positive.

Which firms are hiring?
Investment management boutiques – most notably real estate debt firms, private equity firms and hedge funds – are driving the majority of permanent recruitment demand. We expect larger institutional firms to come to market as and when conditions improve.

Are your skills in demand?
Most demand is for accountants with core accounting skills – reporting roles are particularly prevalent as employers look to analyse business performance for analysis by senior management. Junior financial controllers, management accountants at the part-qualified level and financial/fund accountants at all levels are also being recruited.
