Irish employees feel motivated in the workplace
Ireland, 18-Aug-2009 According to a recent survey by leading specialist professional recruitment consultancy, Robert Walters, over 80% of Irish employees are motivated in their current role, despite the current tough economic conditions. Over 550 Irish professionals were surveyed on a variety of employment related issues ranging from motivation levels and hours worked through to salary and bonus expectations.Respondents were asked to give an indication of their current motivation levels, with 56% of those surveyed saying they were 'motivated', 25% highlighted they were extremely motivated, with only 19% indicating demotivation.
Louise Campbell, Managing Director of Robert Walters Ireland, commented:
"I think there are a number of factors contributing to this result. Firstly, with redundancy programmes commonplace, employees are being asked to take on additional responsibilities, and often therefore gain exposure to new skill-sets and areas of business.
Secondly, and perhaps most importantly, job retention and stability are of great concern to all employees which is a driving factor for employees to stay motivated, productive and effective. 81% of Irish employees surveyed feel that they are motivated or extremely motivated in the current climate and the common denominator with them all is the desire to hold onto their position."
Although the market is candidate rich, companies still need to acknowledge the importance of maintaining a motivated workforce. Good candidates need to know there is a "next step" for them within their current company. Opportunities for promotion may be scarce in today's market however one method to motivate and hold on to quality staff is to promote learning and development programmes. Encourage your staff to suggest training programmes they may be interested in and implement accordingly. Maintaining motivation levels within the workplace increases job satisfaction which in turn helps to sustain a productive office environment.
